Engineering Authority - Drive Engineering Excellence and Technical Assurance Across Critical Assets

Our Client has a requirement for a Engineering Authority, who will be required to work on a contract basis in Barrow-in-Furness.

Role Purpose:

  • Act as the designated Engineering Authority with authority to approve, challenge, or reject engineering decisions.
  • Act as custodian of engineering standards and asset engineering documentation, ensuring compliance and providing recommendations for derogations and dispensations.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve the Technical Authority Framework.
  • Maintain overall ownership of the scope and quality of Safety & Environmental Critical Element (SECE) performance standards.
  • Ensure performance standards are correctly allocated to the appropriate Technical Authority.
  • Identify, assess, and manage technical risks, ensuring risks are reduced to ALARP (or equivalent).
  • Lead or contribute to hazard identification and technical risk assessments.
  • Ensure engineering decisions support safe operations, asset integrity, and lifecycle performance.
  • Act as an escalation point for technical non-conformances and deviations.
  • Support incident investigations through technical judgement and root cause analysis.
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering practices, tools, and governance.
  • Manage engineering service contracts and vendor relationships.
  • Act as a Lead Investigator using Kelvin TopSet investigation techniques.
  • Undertake any other associated duties as reasonably required.

Job Role Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical assurance, governance, and decision-making authority for engineering activities.
  • Ensure engineering activities remain safe, compliant, and aligned with company standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practice.
  • Act as the ultimate technical decision-maker within the discipline.
  • Manage technical risk across the asset lifecycle.
  • Provide leadership and management to outsourced Technical Authority and Engineering service providers.
  • Ensure safe operations and asset integrity through effective engineering governance.
  • Support business requirements through technical leadership and investigation activities.

Experience / Skills / Knowledge / Qualifications:

  • Proven experience acting in a senior technical or assurance role.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable engineering codes, standards, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to make independent technical decisions under pressure.
  • Deep technical expertise within an engineering discipline.
  • Sound engineering judgement and professional integrity.
  • Degree qualified in an Engineering or Technology discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status.
  • Experience in event management and investigation methodologies such as Kelvin TopSet.
