An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Prison Cleared Registered General Nurse (RGN) to work within a secure custodial healthcare environment in Northamptonshire. Role purpose
To deliver safe, effective, and person-centred nursing care within a custodial setting, in line with NHFT policies, NMC standards, and prison service requirements. The post holder will address the physical and mental health needs of prisoners while maintaining security, ethical practice, and professional boundaries at all times.
What you will do

Deliver holistic nursing care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Undertake physical health assessments, chronic disease management, wound care, medication administration, and health monitoring.

Respond effectively to acute presentations and medical emergencies within the prison environment.

Promote health and wellbeing through tailored health promotion and preventative interventions.

Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical records in line with information governance standards.

Administer medications in accordance with PGDs, Trust policy, and prison protocols.

Identify and respond appropriately to mental health needs, substance misuse issues, and safeguarding concerns.

Support individuals at risk of self-harm or suicide in line with ACCT processes.

Work collaboratively with mental health teams, substance misuse services, social care, and primary care colleagues.

Operate safely within prison security procedures while preserving dignity and respect for all patients.

Adhere to infection control, risk management, and clinical governance procedures.

Act consistently in line with the NMC Code of Conduct and organisational values.

Participate in MDT meetings, care planning, and transfer or discharge arrangements.

Escalate clinical concerns appropriately and contribute to continuous service improvement.

Support and supervise junior staff, students, or healthcare assistants where appropriate.

Engage in clinical audit, mandatory training, and ongoing professional development.
Person specification
Essential
-
Registered General Nurse (RGN) with current NMC registration.

Experience working with vulnerable or complex patient groups.

Ability to work autonomously and make sound clinical decisions.

Strong communication, organisational, and documentation skills.

Willingness to undergo prison clearance and enhanced DBS checks.
Desirable

Previous experience within prison healthcare, forensic, or secure settings.

Background in mental health, substance misuse, or primary care.

Non-medical prescribing qualification (Band 6 level).

Evidence of continued professional development.
