About the role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Prison Cleared Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) or RNLD to join a specialist Mental Health Needs Lead (MHNL) service within a custodial setting in Northamptonshire. This ongoing locum role offers excellent flexibility with both full-time and part-time options, alongside a competitive hourly rate of £26.00.

Role purpose
To provide safe, effective, and evidence-based mental health nursing care within a custodial environment. The post holder will assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate care for individuals with complex mental health needs, contributing to improved outcomes while adhering to NMC standards, Trust policies, and prison service requirements.
What you will do

Undertake comprehensive mental health assessments, including risk assessments and formulation of care plans.

Co-produce, implement, and regularly review individualised care plans alongside service users and the MDT.

Deliver therapeutic interventions and ongoing mental health support within the prison setting.

Monitor mental state, medication adherence, and effectiveness of treatment plans.

Respond promptly and effectively to mental health crises and emergency presentations.

Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical documentation in line with Trust and prison policies.

Identify, assess, and manage risks including self-harm, suicide, and vulnerability, contributing to safeguarding processes.

Work collaboratively with prison officers, psychiatrists, psychologists, substance misuse services, and wider healthcare teams.

Participate in MDT meetings, case conferences, and care reviews.

Work safely within prison security procedures while maintaining therapeutic engagement and professional boundaries.

Support, mentor, and guide junior staff and students where appropriate.

Engage in training, supervision, audit activity, and continuous service improvement initiatives.
Person specification
Essential
-
Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) or RNLD with current NMC registration.

Experience working with individuals with complex mental health needs.

Strong skills in risk assessment, crisis intervention, and care planning.

Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Excellent communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills.

Willingness to undergo prison clearance and enhanced DBS checks.
Desirable

Previous experience in forensic, secure, custodial, or inpatient mental health settings.

Knowledge of safeguarding processes and risk management frameworks.

Experience supporting individuals with substance misuse or dual diagnosis.

Non-medical prescribing qualification (Band 6 level).
