Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled Trading Standards Officer to join the Public Protection team at Hull City Council. This ongoing role offers a competitive hourly rate of £53.14, alongside the flexibility to work either full-time or part-time—allowing you to build a fulfilling work–life balance while making a significant impact in the community.

As a key member of the team, you will help ensure fair and safe trading practices across Hull, protecting consumers, supporting businesses, and strengthening community wellbeing.


Key Responsibilities

  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults within the city.

  • Deliver educational programmes, advisory visits, and awareness campaigns to enhance public understanding of consumer rights and safety risks.

  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and support to junior staff and trainees.

  • Assess samples, enforce statutory obligations, and ensure compliance with trading, consumer protection, and public safety legislation.

  • Manage a varied caseload, maintaining accurate, clear, and timely records, reports, and communication.

  • Conduct detailed inspections and surveys to ensure businesses comply with legal standards and identify areas for improvement.

  • Lead investigations into potential breaches of trading laws, gathering evidence for possible legal proceedings.

  • Offer informed advice on legal requirements, supporting fair trading practices through effective negotiation and communication.
